What we’ll cover
“Can I really get my students to practise the language studied in class through speaking activities/tasks? How can I do this?”
Drawing on Stephanie Holme’s experience as a teacher trainer and teacher, this practical workshop shares tried-and-tested speaking tasks that help learners use the target language with confidence. We will look at what makes speaking activities successful (clear outcomes, support, staging and timing), ways to maximise participation so every learner has a meaningful chance to contribute, and simple routines for monitoring and managing speaking stages while keeping the lesson on track. The session is experiential: you will try out activities as a participant and then explore how to adapt them to different levels and contexts.
What you’ll take away
- classroom-ready speaking tasks to practise target language effectively
- practical criteria for designing “successful” activities (setup, support, timing, outcome)
- simple participation structures to increase turn-taking and inclusion
- manageable monitoring and feedback ideas for during/after speaking

In a world where we communicate more and more through screens, the challenge for teachers is to create speaking activities in class that are authentic, effective and genuinely communicative.
This practical workshop will guide you in developing your students’ speaking skills through engaging activities and teaching strategies you can apply immediately.
Pronunciation is often one of the most challenging aspects of language teaching. This practical, interactive workshop provides teachers with a “survival kit” to work with phonology in class in an effective and engaging way.
Participants will review key phonological features, explore common student pronunciation difficulties, and develop practical techniques to take straight into their classrooms.
The workshop is divided into two sessions:
Part 1: phonology fundamentals, transcription basics with practical use of phonemic symbols and phonemic charts, strategies to tackle typical student difficulties
Part 2: connected speech, sentence stress and intonation, the art of drilling, a toolkit of classroom-ready activities

Writing is often one of the most overlooked and daunting skills for both teachers and students due to its multifaceted structure, varied genres and diverse communicative contexts. However, as with any skill, writing cannot be passively absorbed — it must be actively taught.
This engaging workshop is designed to provide teachers with innovative strategies for teaching and assessing writing effectively. Participants will explore a range of approaches that can be seamlessly integrated into Cambridge English exam preparation. Emphasis will be placed on creating lessons that are both communicative and interactive, optimising the experience for both students and teachers.
The workshop will also deepen teachers’ understanding of writing assessment across CEFR levels, with a focus on the Cambridge English Writing Assessment Scales, offering practical insights into how to evaluate and support students’ writing development in class.
The workshop is structured in two key parts:
-
Part 1 addresses the challenges of teaching writing, the importance of genre analysis, and provides practical ideas and resources to support effective teaching.
-
Part 2 explores the complexities of assessing writing, introduces the Cambridge English Writing Assessment Scales and their criteria, and offers hands-on activities and resources for assessment in the classroom.
By the end of the session, attendees will leave with a toolkit of practical ideas and strategies to teach and assess writing with confidence, helping students develop this essential skill for academic and real-world success.
A practical session where you can try out engaging, easily adaptable activities that require little preparation and can be used with teenage and adult classes. We will also reflect on how closely these activities align with theories of language learning.
