The pre-service CELTA course is aimed mainly at people with little or no teaching experience. It is also suitable for people with teaching experience but without any formal training. It is considered a solid base for teaching English as a foreign language.
The course is recognised by EFL organisations throughout the world and the certificate is the most highly respected of its type.
The requirements to join the course are: minimum CEFR level of English high C1 or above and a high school diploma or equivalent. Please note that many employers require a degree as well.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old (at the start of the course) and, generally speaking, must have a level of education which will enable them to enter higher education in their own countries.
The course is open to native and non-native speakers although candidates must have a competence and knowledge of English, both written and spoken, that enables them to take the course and teach English.
The course consists of seminars with your tutors in the morning, where you will learn about different teaching techniques and aspects of the English language, and teaching practice in the afternoon. Here you will have the opportunity to teach real students, and afterwards you will get feedback on your lessons from your tutor and peers.
The part-time CELTA course, with frequency two evenings a week and some Saturdays, is the ideal solution if you have weekday commitments, e.g. studying or working. The course length is 12 weeks. The part-time course is less intensive than the full-time one, but it is equally demanding. You will be expected to spend time outside the course hours on preparation, assignment writing and revision.
- Teaching Practice takes place on Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, followed by feedback
- Input session on Saturdays from 9.30am to 4.30pm
